Finishing Experiment-Magician
Looks good! Began by covering the wingtips with Sig Coverall. It is the only covering that works for me on wingtips. The balsa under the Coverall has one coat of Stewart-McDonald Colortone water based gloss clear Guitar Lacquer on it. Then the Coverall was attached with the guitar lacquer. Then the Coverall was shrunk with a heat gun. Then two coats of guitar lacquer were brushed on the covering. Then the wing was coated with Balsarite. Then the open bays on the wing were covered with Monokote. Then the balsa on the rest of the plane had one coat of guitar lacquer brushed on and sanded. Then the wing was taped off. Here comes the experiment: I found this water based Krylon Primer in Walmart the other day. So I thought I would try it. The gray primer you see in the picture is the water based Krylon primer from Walmart.
There is a theme here. So far this plane only needs to be sanded before the color coats can be brushed on. And the only bad smell so far was the Balsarite. Which does not smell that bad. I am trying to find a fuel proof system that will not stink up the house, is light enough, and looks pretty good without too much work.
